knowledge is never ending.

today's lesson, i learnt alot about ship/sea related accidents.

and because captain lim wanted to stress the importance of ship stability to planners like us, he showed us an classical example where stability was disrupted.

cougar ace was a singapore-flaged vessel. it was a RORO (roll-on roll-off) which carried more than 4000 cars during the voyage.

in 2006, the vessel listed to almost 80 degree to the starboard (a term used for the sides of vessel) during transfer of ballast and due to free surface moment and as well as external factors which resulted in heeling. and therefore the vessel listed very badly to the starboard side.

it wasnt the fault of the captain. it was just an very unfortunate combination of all factors tt resulted in this mishap.

important lesson for everyone to bear in mind. to read the story, please google it urself!

such courses make me appreciate my job more and understand the dynamic nature of shipping industry. :)
