blood diamonds. you know, sometimes u never know how ur day can end unexpectedly. as i was typing my previous post just now, i did my eye mask, chatted on the phone and wanted to call it a day already. it so happened that i switched on the cable tv channel 8 history channel with my peanut ang ku kueh and i watched this BLOOD DIAMOND prog. it made me feel really really sad bcos i realise how diamonds can even spark off a war. there have been many wars over diamonds. it hurts to know how we dont bat our eyelids when we pay a couple of thousands $$ for a small diamond accessory when war-slaves/diamonds-miners barely earn USD 200 per YEAR. the money is not the prominent factor. the more intolerable truth is many millions of people have died over these so-called precious stones. as far as im concerned and at least research has shown, diamonds are not rare. diamonds are plentiful in supply and there are amazing advance infrastructure to collect these raw diamonds. the supply is limited bcos of smart businessmen who knew the trick to jerk up prices. plus the fascinating marketing strategy that reminds everyone that diamond is linked to love and that all girls in love should owe a diamond no matter how broke their bf is. and as a matter of fact, diamond OUGHT to be forever. in fact, diamond is not forever. going by the theory of chemistry, there is this high enthalpy theory(if i didnt rem wrongly) and therefore it is not so easy to break diamond down. but it does decompose slowly over time and the caluclated time for a small diamond stone to disappear is abt 250-300 years. (it has been scientifically and mathematically proven) why i spend the time to type this post despite my droopy eyes is bcos i feel alot for all these wars. the empathy for war victims is even stronger ever since i came back from vietnam. with my limited command of english, i cant express enuff my thots of wars. but truly, wars all started bcos of greed. ![]() take a look of this pic and tell me if u feel something. these victims got their hands amputated bcos the rebels wanted to prevent them from voting for the current govt again so that the rebels can gain control of the country which is diamond-rich. In relation to diamond trading, blood diamond (also called a converted diamond, conflict diamond, hot diamond or a war diamond) refers to a diamond mined in a war zone and sold, usually clandestinely, in order to finance an insurgency, invading army's war efforts, or supporting a warlord's activity, especially in Africa. the more i watched the prog, the more i wanted to switch it off. i texted yellow abt wat i felt and she told me abt other more controvesial issues. i ought to pay more attention during my GP classes and be more aware of such world issues. i was so ignorant in the past and shame on me. tmr i will go and buy the blood diamond vcd and watch it and reflect on myself. i have been one of those ignorant owners who possess 4-5 diamond accessories and im ashamed to admit it. i wonder how many lives were lost bcos of my silly quest of vanity. despite the enhanced look that diamonds have given me, i will give up wearing some of it (and some on me bcos of personal reasons) and keep it as personal collection and to remind myself that ive been so silly. no more diamonds for me anymore. i cant bear to watch it anymore. im heading to bed NOW. :( |
